Eligibility: You must be aged 19+ and live in West Yorkshire.

Duration: 5 days - 20th – 24th May (8 delegates) Block week

14th June – 12th July (10 delegates) 5 Fridays

Overview/summary of training

The course aims to help Site managers and Supervisors -

  • Manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions and within the context of their management role
  • Develop an understanding of responsibilities and accountability for site health, safety and welfare.

The course content of the Site Management Safety Training Scheme includes:

  • The legal background (Acts, regulations, Approved codes of practice and guidance) relevant to safe site management and awareness of responsibilities and accountability regarding these.
  • Management of contractors – Construction, design and management regulations 2015 and the relationship between duty holders.
  • Safe set-up and provision on site, assessments of risk and implementing safe systems of work
  • Safety considerations in different operational construction scenarios including scaffolding and working at heights, use of working equipment, lifting operations, hazardous substances, Noise, Asbestos, demolition works, electrical works, Fire safety, manual handling, vibration control, excavations and confined spaces, occupational health.
  • Health and safety information communication
  • Inspections and accident reporting requirements under the RIDDOR regulations.
  • Maintaining a positive health and safety culture within the workplace, best practice and communications.

To pass the SMSTS course you must:

  • Complete all 5 days.
  • Successfully interact with the class and pass exercises set during the course.
  • Complete and pass a multiple-choice assessment end of the course.

On achievement, you will receive a certificate which will be valid for 5 years.

SMSTS will reinforce essential knowledge and capabilities on site.

 

What next?

Employed progression route: You will probably be team leaders looking to progress into a role as a manager, or senior manager and take on greater responsibility and oversight of construction projects.

 

Self Employed progression route: SMSTS if often a requirement for small companies to tender for works, therefore, this would open many more avenues for self employed individuals. It would also increase access to opportunities allowing you to take on more responsibilities resulting in increased turnover.

 

Unemployed progression route: You will probably have been team leaders and are looking to progress into a role as a manager, or senior manager and take on greater responsibility and oversight of construction projects. Often when employers are looking to recruit this is a minimum requirement for a management role. Job search evidence attached.
